Blue Through and Through College Football Rankings: Week 11

You're reading the rankings that were the last college football ranking to include Washington in the Top 25, and the last to place them inside the Top 10.  The hesitation proved to be right, as Washington was outclassed on their home field by unranked USC 26-13.

LSU finally has an impressive win after beating Arkansas.  Up until this time, the Tigers' biggest win came over an average Mississippi team.

The media and coaches' polls are once again caught up in hype and putting too much emphasis on the latest results.  Case in point:  USC.  The Trojans have won six in a row and are playing great right now, but one doesn't all of a sudden forget the three losses prior to that.  USC lost to the #16 team, so we know they can't be higher than that.  And, they lost to Stanford, which, with the exact record as USC, has to be ranked ahead of the Trojans because of a head-to-head beating.  Stanford, meanwhile, isn't Top 25 material because their biggest win is over unranked USC and has three losses, less than Oklahoma and Colorado ahead of them.  Colorado has to be ranked ahead of Stanford because of a better record and a win over the Cardinal.

Troy has to be ranked ahead of Nebraska because in comparable matchups, the Trojans lost to #3 Clemson 30-24, while Nebraska lost to #2 Ohio State 62-3.

Penn State has moved past Boise State, but it's close.  Penn State has a win over the #2 team in the country while the Broncos have not beaten a ranked team.  The Broncos have one less loss, which until this week was not a bad loss.  But with Wyoming's loss to UNLV, it looks as bad as Penn State's loss to Pittsburgh.  The overriding factor here is the win over #2 Ohio State.  Until Boise State has a better win than that, or until Washington State is ranked fairly high, or until another Bronco opponent is under the "other teams considered" list, the Broncos will not pass Penn State.

LSU has to be ranked ahead of Florida because they beat Arkansas 38-10 while the Gators lost to them, 31-10.

South Florida, Navy, Houston and Oklahoma have to be ranked in that order.  They all have two losses, with South Florida beating Navy, Navy beating Houston and Houston beating Oklahoma.

(Note:  the rankings are based on logic rather than hype or potential.  Teams with the same record are judged by their biggest wins and their losses, if any.  Impressive wins over Top 25 teams are more important than other wins, and losses to Top 25 teams hurt far less than other losses.

The "Biggest Win" refers to the highest-ranked win; generally, only ranked teams and teams being considered are listed.  Sometimes, as in the case of Western Michigan, they don't have a win over teams in these rankings, and it is unknown at this time which of their listed wins is the biggest.)
