Boise State Wins Mountain Division Championship with 50-19 Win over Utah State

Jay Ajayi had a career night with 229 yards rushing (fifth-best in school history) and a school record-tying five touchdowns as Boise State blitzed the #5 scoring defense in the nation, Utah State, 50-19 in Albertsons Stadium.

Boise State looked a lot like the best Bronco teams of recent years, and little like the one that lost to Mississippi or Air Force, in capturing the Mountain Division of the Mountain West Conference.  Boise State will try for its first Mountain West title next Saturday against Fresno State.

The Bronco offense was on fire, as they have now scored on 42-42 trips to the red zone, with an incredible 34 of those scores coming on touchdowns.  Boise State now ranks eighth in the nation in total offense, averaging 512 yards a game.

When Utah State missed a field goal try on the opening try, it turned out that it would be their best chance to take the lead.  Boise State took advantage by marching the length of the field to go ahead 7-0 on a nine-yard Ajayi run.  Alec Dhaenens capped a six-play drive on Boise State's next possession with a two-yard catch from quarterback Grant Hedrick in the end zone.

The Aggies came back with a nine-yard scamper from quarterback Kent Myers to cut the lead to 14-7, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the night.  The Broncos answered that score when Ajayi somehow shook off a tackler on his way towards the turf, shifted direction, and outran the Aggie secondary into the left corner of the end zone.  The extra point attempt was blocked, and Utah State's Jalen Davis ran it the length of the field for a two-point play to cut the Bronco lead to 20-9.

After that, it was all Boise State.  Ajayi scored again from eight yards out as the Broncos drove 62 yards to take a 27-9 lead, one Boise State extended to 34-9 when Hedrick found Thomas Sperbeck for a 24-yard scoring strike on their next possession.  Utah State was able to get a 46-yard field goal from Nick Diaz prior to halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter as both defenses took control.  Ajayi finished his night with scoring runs of 62 and one yard in the fourth quarter.  The Bronco reserves scored a safety with 4:57 remaining, and Daniel Gray scored the final points for Utah State when he gathered in a fumble and took it 50 yards into the end zone.

Ajayi averaged over eight yards a carry 27-229) in ringing up his seventh consecutive game with at least two rushing touchdowns.  Ajayi tied the school mark for rushing touchdowns in a game set by Jon Helmandollar vs. Louisiana Tech in 2004 and equaled by Ian Johnson against Oregon State in 2006.  (see chart at end of article).

Ajayi moved into a tie for another school record with his eighth 150-yard rushing game, tying former Bronco greats Cedric Minter and Brock Forsey.  Ajayi also tied Ian Johnson for fourth place with his 16th 100-yard game, and is behind only Minter for 200-yard games.  (See charts at the bottom of this article).

Ajayi passed Tampa Bay Buccaneer Doug Martin for third place with 46 career rushing touchdowns, and he also passed Martin and Chris Thomas for fourth place in career rushing yards with 3,608.  Ajayi set another record in carries in a season with 302.

Jay soared to #7 among the nation's top rushers with his performance last night--he is now averaging nearly 135 yards a game, and Ajayi ranks third in all-purpose yardage.

Almost forgotten in Ajayi's record-breaking night was the steady play of Hedrick, who completed 18 of 24 passes for 191 yards and two scores.  Hedrick passed Kellen Moore and is now second in Bronco history with 3,894 yards of total offense this season.  Hedrick surpassed Ryan Dinwiddie's 2001 season and is now eighth for single-season passing with 3,233 yards.

Shane Williams-Rhodes caught six passes for 44 yards and also picked up eight yards on an end-around.  SWR passed two of Boise State's top all-time receivers, Ryan Ikebe and Jeremy Childs, and is now ranked seventh in career receptions with 171.

The tight end, a neglected part of the Boise State offense the past two years, is an integral part of offensive coordinator Mike Sanford's game plan, and freshman Jake Roh caught four passes for 75 yards.  With 31 catches on the season, Roh already has more receptions than all of the Bronco tight ends had last season or in 2012.  Roh tied Kyle Efaw for fourth place for the most receptions by a Bronco tight end in a season.

Myers completed 16-28 for 159 yards and also gained 43 yards rushing for Utah State, which finished the regular season 8-4.

Boise State, now 10-2, hosts Fresno State in the Mountain West Championship Saturday night in Albertsons Stadium.  Season ticket holders have until Tuesday to pick up their tickets before they are released to the public.  Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
