Big East Includes Double the Households of Second-Place League

Boise State knew it was landing a major deal when the school joined the Big East Conference.  People that crunch the numbers now say that, in terms of television sets, the Big East is not only #1 in the nation, but conference schools contain twice as many households as the second place league.

The conference will enter negotiations with ESPN beginning September 1 and those talks will last 60 days.  If ESPN doesn't win the contract, the Big East will test those nation-leading numbers on the open market.  In an interview Sunday on WLW in Cincinnati, Ohio, Nick Carparelli, senior associate commissioner, indicated that he expects the conference will come close to or exceed the $17 million per team figure that the Atlantic Coast Conference currently has.

The conference is also exploring options for its conference football champion.  The Orange Bowl has expressed interest in including the Big East champion in its games in years that it doesn't host a national playoff game.  Another option that the league is considering, according to Carparelli, is a new bowl game at a location and date of its choosing.

Carparelli expressed optimism in both the television contract and bowl possibilities for the Big East, and indicated that an announcement for both will be made in the next few months.
