The new-look tenacious Boise State defense forced seven turnovers tonight in Bronco Stadium and in the process, gave offensive coordinator Robert Prince plenty to work on as the Broncos get ready to face #8 Michigan State in less than two weeks.
Freshman defensive back Darian Thompson had two interceptions and led the team with seven tackles. Fellow Freshmen Chanceller James and Donte Deayon, junior nickel Jonathan Brown and freshman defensive end Darien Barrett added picks on the evening. Surging nickelback Corey Bell added a highlight 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown for the defense.
There were two bright spots for the offense--junior quarterback Joe Southwick and the Boise State running game. Southwick completed 16-of-24 passes for 141 yards, far and away the most effective of the Boise State signal-callers. Freshmen Jay Ajayi and Jack Fields showed why the outlook for the tailbacks is so bright. Ajayi had 78 yards on seven carries and a touchdown while Fields carried 10 times for 51 yards. Mitch Burroughs caught a six-yard TD strike from Southwick and led the Bronco receivers with seven catches for 70 yards. Hayden Plinke hauled in a 75-yard touchdown reception from freshman quarterback Jimmy Laughrea.
