The early weeks show teams that have been the most impressive thus far, rather than ranking teams from a biased point of view. Nevertheless, they will be volatile until the teams sort it out on the field. The #1 factor in ranking teams is their Biggest Wins, losses are most damaging if they are to unranked teams. This encourages teams to schedule other Top 25 teams.
This poll had UCLA, Washington and Auburn ranked before anyone else "in the know". Oregon dropped because their biggest win (Tennessee) continues to look less impressive. If the Ducks can win the tougher games on their schedule in the weeks to come, they will move back up. Oklahoma and Michigan passed them because of their wins over Notre Dame, which scored a win over ranked Arizona State.
Stanford shot up with their second win over a Top 25 team, tying Alabama and Georgia with that distinction. Still, no one has matched Clemson's win over the #3 team in the nation and that continues to put Clemson at #1.
The SEC has eight teams in the Top 25, while the Pac-12 has five. Those are (by far) the top two conferences in the nation this year.
