Such is the heat in Boise, Idaho in September that the Broncos have found the perfect solution--play their first two games on the road with a bye week in between. They've used that strategy each of the last two years.
Tomorrow night, Boise State hosts a talented Tulsa squad in Bronco Stadium that played until the wee hours of the morning last Sunday against Oklahoma State. Come tomorrow night, the Golden Hurricane will have faced three of the nation's Top 10 teams; they also have a game with #1 Oklahoma.
After viewing the Boise State-Toledo highlights from last week, Tulsa is kind of anticipating that the Bronco defense will be gracious hosts tomorrow evening. Last week, the Boise State defenders escorted Toledo ball carriers down the field, running along side them as they politely gave up big chunks of yardage. Toledo, in fact, had them fooled all game long with their expert playcalling. When the Bronco defensive line was able to get a rush, it was only because Toledo wanted it that way, so they could sling screen passes to receivers right where the fooled Bronco defenders had just come from. I expect Tulsa's coaches were taking scrupulous notes.
Meanwhile, Kellen Moore has saved the day for the Boise State offense in wins over Georgia and Toledo--the running game has not been near what we'd all been expecting this season. I'm hoping what took place last year, with improvement in the ground game as the season progressed, will occur again this season. The potential is certainly there, but consistent blocking and manhandling of the opposition has yet to commence.
Tulsa quarterback Greg Kinne, talented at both running and passing, was injured in the game with Oklahoma State and is questionable. He's a tough kid; if he can possibly be out there, he will be. As a fan, I'm certainly hoping I see him on the field.
Tulsa has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Pegged as huge underdogs by the oddsmakers, Tulsa would love nothing better than to give Mark May, Craig James and all the other Bronco critics plenty of material for their shows.
Remember Boise State has planned a "tri-color" scheme tomorrow night. There will be three colors (blue, orange and white) but don't leave it up to chance--consult the diagram below to see what is fashionable attire in the section where you'll be sitting.
Fall is in the air, even if we still have summer temperatures. Best of all, football is back in Boise--kickoff at 6 p.m. tomorrow night!
