As you know, Boise State is one of the top candidates for expansion by the Big 12 Conference. Regardless of what happens, the Broncos sit well in the whole realignment process.
If Boise State is invited by the Big 12, it's an AQ conference in the current evaluation period. If the conference remains intact, Boise State is in it for a long time. If Texas and Oklahoma were to leave, Boise State would be able to hand-pick its new conference mates--a win-win situation.
If Boise State is not invited, it will be because the Big 12 raided the Big East Conference, which has three of the top candidates (West Virginia, TCU and Louisville). The Big East has already lost two of their top schools to the ACC. If they lost 1 or 2 others, the Mountain West Conference (which Boise State is a proud new member of) would beat out the Big East in all three areas that the BCS uses to determine its automatic qualifying conferences.
Either way, Boise State gets AQ status.
The only real question is: Does the BCS just want to include Boise State as an AQ or do they want to add the entire Mountain West? That question will be answered by the Big 12 in the next two weeks or so.
